General Information

The Chemistry Department is one of the seven departments at the Science Faculty of Ege University. In 1955, upon the foundation of Ege University, a chemical institute was established in the Faculty of Medicine. This institute was then transferred to the Faculty of Science, and divided into general, physical, industrial and food chemistry divisions. In 1973 the divisions were gathered into a department.

The department contains four divisions; analytical, inorganic, organic and physical chemistry. The Chemistry education programme includes one-year English language preparation period followed by 4 years. At the end of the Chemistry Bachelor of Science programme, they are awarded as Chemist. Students who are graduated from the Chemistry Department may apply to MSc and PhD programmes in Chemistry. About 100 students graduate each year. The courses are given by teaching staff of the department and a few lecturers from other departments. Chemistry Department includes 15 full professors, 5 associate professor, 4 assistant professors, 2 lecturers and other members of the academic staff who also function at post-graduate studies.

The Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry is awarded to students who have succesfully completed all courses in the curriculum, including 45 working days apprenticeship (course of instruction) period.

Educational and Professional Goals

Chemistry degree program is designed to provide the students the fundemantals of chemistry. The first year courses mainly consist of physics, general chemistry, mathematics and computing to bring the knowledge levels of students from different background to the same level. The compulsary courses offered in further years include physical, analytical, inorganic and organic chemistry. These courses also include laboratory studies to provide technical skills necessary to enter their career as chemists. It was mainly aimed to give the students an analytical approach for solving any problem and handling complex information as well as the laboratory experience. Third and fourth year of curriculum include elective courses especially designed to developed the intelligent approach of the students to the problems of industry.

Access to Further Studies

Graduates with the Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry are in demand in a wide range of areas and they may apply to the many branches in industry and are usually employed in laboratory-based jobs. Chemists might join a research group in the universities and instutues. Education is another major area for employment.
